The online training is a one to one session offered through the Skype
platform. It is obviously not as good as training in a class with other
students and having the instructor right in front of you, but it is also
obviously better than nothing, which is what many are faced with if they
move away from our area, or are just not close enough to start off with.

There is only so much that we can do if you are training on your own.
Martial arts and self-defense by definition involve at least two people in
conflict. Training with a partner would be best, and I would teach a one
to two session through Skype. Ideally, at least one session a week on your
own to learn technique and at least one session a week with a training
partner to practice technique application. Absent a training partner,
there is equipment available that can help. First, a punch bag, preferably
hanging, not free standing. Second, a wooden man, which is a post that
rotates around the central axis, with arms and legs sticking out, acting
as a substitute partner, and who never complains that you go too hard!

Generally speaking, students as a group have three different goals. These
are self-defense, fitness and learning a martial art. These three goals do
overlap, but if you have a preference, let me know and I can tailor my
teaching to match.

Ideally, you will have a moveable webcam, or lots of room, as I will want
to see you perform techniques from the front and side, as well as
observing your feet.

I can teach beginners and experienced students, t’ai chi and kung fu which
can include various weapons, although for some of the weapons you will
need plenty of room! With the three section staff, you simply can’t have
too much room!

We are also planning a series of instructional videos on the basics, that
you can study in your own time and learn at your own pace. A good way to
check if you have learned correctly is by having me check your techniques
in an online lesson.
